The Welsh Government supports local authorities’ delivery of road safety education and training through the provision of transport grant funding. Powys County Council were allocated £108,900 from the Road Safety Grant in 2025-26 for the delivery of road safety training and education.

Under the new Regional Transport Fund they have been allocated £200,000 capital and £110,030 revenue for road safety interventions in 2026-27.

The Road Safety Partnership Plan 2026-2040, due to be published shortly, sets out our collaborative vision for transforming road safety across Wales.  It adopts the internationally recognised Vision Zero and is underpinned by the Safe System approach. The Plan aims to eliminate road deaths and serious injuries and reducing road related harms whilst fostering a transport system that is accessible, sustainable, efficient, inclusive and fair for all.

My officials routinely review personal injury collisions on the trunk roads to inform road safety engineering improvements. They are progressing a number of road safety engineering measures including route safety improvements at Pont y Bat / Llandefalle bends, improvements to roadside safety and safety fencing at Storey Arms, safety improvements in Rhayader town centre, at Moat Lane/Caersws, and the A458 Middletown.

We have also successfully completed Phase 1 safety works on the A40 Millbrook section. This first phase focused on a package of safety measures, including improved road markings and signage, visibility enhancements, active travel improvements, a speed limit reduction to 50mph, and vehicle restraint systems where required. These measures were identified as providing immediate benefits in reducing accident risk and improving safety for all road users.

The effectiveness of these interventions will now be closely monitored to ensure they deliver the intended improvements.
