The Welsh Government, in partnership with Transport for Wales (TfW), works closely with local authorities to enhance active travel infrastructure in line with their Active Travel Network Maps (ATNMs). This collaboration is supported through the Active Travel Fund, which provides targeted investment to help deliver these improvements.

Through TfW, we offer dedicated support, guidance, and resources to empower local authorities to plan, deliver, and promote safe and accessible walking, wheeling, and cycling routes. These efforts aim to connect communities with a wide range of destinations—including cultural landmarks and tourism attractions—encouraging more sustainable and inclusive travel choices.

The Welsh Government is working with local authorities across North Wales to improve active travel links to key destinations:

  • In Wrexham, a new route will connect the rail station to the city centre and cultural sites like the Stok Racecourse and Wrexham Museum, which will soon include the Football Museum of Wales.
  • In Conwy, improvements to the promenade at Rhos-on-Sea have been supported via the Active Travel Fund, with improvements such as e-cycle charging and maintenance stations, cycle parking, benches and play equipment.
  • In Gwynedd, improvements have been undertaken along the A470 to improve active travel provision between Blaenau Ffestiniog and the Llechwedd Slate Caverns and Zip World;
  • On Ynys Môn, a new dedicated active travel route between Malltraeth and Newborough will extend Lon Las Cefni to Newborough Village and Forest, supporting the ambitions of the Glasffordd Môn Green Corridor partnership.
