The Football Museum for Wales project is being led by Wrexham County Borough Council and will be sited at the Wrexham Museum. It is scheduled to open to the public in Spring 2026. Over the life of the project Welsh Government has awarded over £6.4m to its development and delivery.

The project is at an exciting point, with building work now well progressed, and the project team liaising with fit out contractors, for example to source and supply text and images for graphic panels, agreeing case designs and inputting into prototypes for interactives and audio-visual material.

Engagement and consultation with local and football communities has been core to both the development of the project plans, and the content of the museum’s collection and interpretation. This will continue after opening with plans for ongoing community engagement activities, partnership building with community organisations, learning opportunities for both formal and informal learners, and increased volunteering opportunities.

The opening of a new nationally styled museum in the city, the first in north-east Wales, in addition to the redeveloped city history galleries, will be an asset for locals and tourists alike. It will add to the critical mass of attractions within both the city-centre and the region, strengthening the visitor offer. The Wrexham team are seeking to take advantage of the opportunities presented by this development, building on the profile the city is enjoying currently. The museum is embedded in the Council’s Destination Management Plan and Partnership, and focus will be placed on the promotion of the attraction and its local, national and international resonance, marketing in its own right and in connection with other sites and initiatives.

The Football Museum for Wales will clearly play a critical role in attracting more visitors and tourists to the area, to explore the city’s heritage and Welsh football’s rich history.
