Under the regulatory framework and local management of schools’ arrangements, schools and governing bodies in Wales can source staff as appropriate. This includes making decisions on how they contract teaching assistants. Some information is provided by local authorities on the employment of teaching assistants as part of the Schools Workforce Annual Census but local authorities would need to verify information on the number of teaching assistants employed on temporary contracts.
