The changes implemented by Transport for Wales (TfW) for the December 2024 timetable followed a strategic review of the rail timetable across the Wales and Borders network to better align services with post pandemic travel demand, ensure capacity is provided where it is most needed and reduce the overall public subsidy by increasing patronage. The views of stakeholders across Wales and Borders have been a vital element of this review as part TfW’s consultation.

I have been assured by the Chief Executive of TfW that the new timetable on the Heart of Wales line will deliver the improvement in punctuality and reliability that passengers deserve. In the coming weeks, passengers on the line will be able to benefit from the newly converted Class 153 Active Travel units, providing additional seating and cycle capacity to serve local communities and accommodate the important tourism market. TfW has also been working closely with Powys County Council to introduce additional bus services which complement the new rail timetable, boosting the wider public transport provision in the region.

Alongside the promotion of the dedicated range of ticketing and concessionary passes available on the Heart of Wales Line, together these changes seek to connect communities and encourage more people to use both rail and bus services.
