Activity tourism, including downhill mountain biking, is an important element in promoting the tourism and outdoor activity offer in a region, attracting new visitors many of whom stay locally and use other services.

Data from 2022-23 estimates that spend from domestic visitors on overnight mountain biking trips in Wales totalled £31m annually. Data from day trips is not yet available, although we expect the total spend from all visitors will increase this figure.

Statistics are not available at a regional level or for the specific discipline of downhill mountain biking. However, data from the Red Bull Hardline annual downhill mountain bike race in the Dyfi Valley, which was supported to grow by the Welsh Government, indicates that over 80% of spectators were from outside Wales and the Economic Impact was over £1m per year. This highlights the benefits that such events and activities can bring to an area.
