The main national data source we currently have available to report on active travel participation is the National Survey for Wales, the reporting of which is aligned with financial years, rather than calendar years.

The most recent available data is for 2021-22 and 2022-23, which is published on Statistics Wales website and in statistical bulletins Active travel (walking and cycling) | GOV.WALES.  The data for April 2022 to March 2023, shows that among adults aged 16+ and over:

  • 6% of people cycled at least once a week for active travel purposes

There is an opportunity to strengthen our understanding of active travel use and the frequency with which people make active travel trips with the proposed National Travel Survey for Wales, which is currently being piloted.

Whilst we do not have other national statistics time-series data, there are other data sources that can provide additional contextual information, such as the monitoring data for routes provided by local authorities. Local authorities will prepare their Performance Reports that cover the last two financial years by the end of September.
