Duties are placed on local authorities in Wales to provide education for children who, for whatever reason, are not able to attend school. Where a place is not available at a pupil referral unit (PRU), local authorities must arrange alternative education other than at school (EOTAS) provision. This could include, for example, home tuition.

The Welsh Government does not collect data about the number of children who are awaiting a placement at a PRU. This information is held by local authorities. We do, however, collect information about the number of children awaiting an EOTAS placement. The latest available data relates to the week of 16 January 2023 to 20 January 2023. During this week there were 63 pupils awaiting an EOTAS placement.
