A budget of £2.5m was initially allocated to support Cwmni Egino in its first three years of operation. By March 2024, the end of the first three-year period, £3.4m had been expended against the initial budget. The allocation was increased at the beginning of the 2023-24 financial year to recognise the progress being made by Cwmni Egino at the time.

In April 2023, the UK Government (UKG) created Great British Nuclear (GBN). Given their similar remits, we have been in regular contact with UKG over the past 12 months to determine the future of Trawsfynydd and establish how GBN and CE can work together. We have sought early clarity from both UKG and GBN as to what role can CE play in an evolving policy and delivery landscape.

Disappointingly, GBN has made it clear that it does not favour Trawsfynydd as a site for SMR development in the short term (i.e. the next 5 years). CE cannot realistically continue with its plans for Trawsfynydd without GBN’s overt support and thus CE’s budget of £0.5m for 2024-25, set in conjunction with CE’s CEO, aims to meet the company’s immediate requirements as discussions continue with both UKG and GBN.
