The Bro sociolinguistic survey is a project delivered in partnership between the Welsh Government, the University of Wales Trinity St David, the University of the Highlands and Islands and Christ’s College Cambridge. The survey is based on the comprehensive sociolinguistic survey methodology undertaken in Ireland and Scotland.

The survey aims to look in detail and obtain a deep understanding of the reasons behind the language shift occurring within our Welsh-speaking communities.

An additional £200k has been made available to this project in order to provide a better insight to the significant decline in the number of speakers in Carmarthenshire and the former industrial heartland areas of the Western Valleys. This work is being carried out in collaboration with Cefin Campbell the Plaid Cymru designated member, as part of the Co-operation Agreement between the Welsh Government and Plaid Cymru.

This is a three year project which is due to be completed by the end of March 2026.
