Through our Neurodivergence Improvement Programme we are taking an integrated approach to developing neurodivergence services and recognise the need for early identification. We are working collaboratively to support Additional Learning Needs reform to ensure that children and young people receive timely, needs based support and referrals to ND assessment services where appropriate.

Our education reforms aim to ensure children and young people have their needs met in a more timely way. Early intervention, intervention and prevention is a key principle underpinning the Additional Learning Needs (ALN) system.

A diagnosis is not required to ensure support is provided to a learner and a range of professional learning and resources are available to education practitioners to support early intervention.  These include a national ALN professional learning programme, SpLD Framework and guidance on screening, assessment and intervention and an enabling learning guidance.  There is a section within this SpLD Framework to assist practitioners in identifying, supporting and implementing targeted interventions for learners at risk of falling behind their peers.

The Welsh Government also supports early identification of neurodivergence needs through funding the Wales National Neurodivergence Team (NNT) (until recently called the National Autism Team), which has developed resources to increase knowledge skills and understanding of neurodivergent conditions for professionals in health, social care and education.

The NNT has established an ALNCo Community of Practice and has organised workshops to upskill the education workforce to support early identification and management of a range of neurodivergent conditions such as dyslexia.  They recently held online session with Marjorie Thomas – Supporting learners with Dyslexia which is available on their website.
