The Welsh Government does not collect school capacity figures as part of the annual school census. However, local authorities continue to voluntarily provide data to the Welsh Government so that information on school capacity and uptake continues to be available to inform all Wales policy on the planning of school places. Welsh Government is unable to comment on the validity of the data that is provided as part of that exercise.
From the voluntary 2023 data provided by local authorities, 11 local authorities had oversubscribed Welsh-medium schools. The data shows that there were 43 oversubscribed Welsh-medium schools, broken down as follows:
