The recycling rate at Transport for Wales’ Llys Cadwyn headquarters was 83% in 2022/23 – exceeding the baseline expected recycling rate for public bodies in Wales of 70%.
Transport for Wales has an overall recycling rate of 47%, with 80% of its waste generated by customers at stations and on trains.
The majority of this waste is contaminated, with current Department for Transport security guidance reducing opportunities to separate waste. It also often includes sharps, animal waste and fly-tipping. This non-recyclable waste is processed by energy from waste facilities.
To increase recycling rates further, Transport for Wales is working with waste consultants and Welsh Government to become early adopters of legislation for the separation of waste.
