The Welsh Government does not provide specific direct financial support to families to pay for social care. However, the Welsh Government has put in place a maximum charge of £100 per week for domiciliary care, and a capital limit of £50,000 for residential care.

Charging policies are a matter for local authorities to develop, implement and manage at a local level if they so wish.

The discretion to charge for adult social care is provided within the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014 and underpinned by associated regulations and codes of practice. In developing this legislative framework, the Welsh Government requires that any charging policies for adult social care are fair and reasonable, means tested, and based on the capital assets and income of the individual in receipt of social care.
