The Code of Guidance for local authorities on the allocation of accommodation and homelessness sets out guidance for local authorities on the use of temporary accommodation.

This statutory guidance makes it clear that temporary accommodation should be suitable, and authorities should be aligning appropriate support to those in temporary accommodation so that movement into settled longer-term accommodation can be facilitated as quickly as possible.

Prevention remains our focus, and our priority is to reduce the number of people needing temporary accommodation. In support of this, we have provided an additional £6m to Local Authorities for a Discretionary Homelessness Prevention Fund.

To support local authorities with move-on, £76m has been made available through the Transitional Accommodation Capital Programme to deliver 936 properties and additional homes this year and next to increase good quality longer term accommodation to support all those in housing need.
