It was shocking to see the reports of the passing of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill in Uganda recently. Our position in Wales is very clear: we stand in solidarity with LGBTQ+ communities everywhere. This new Bill will exacerbate the discriminatory and marginalising narratives against gay, lesbian, and bisexual people.

The Welsh Government is fully committed to striving for social justice and will go on promoting an open, progressive Wales that is committed to the values of inclusivity and equality. Our aim, through our LGBTQ+ Action Plan for Wales, is to show our clear commitment to respecting, protecting, and fulfilling the human rights of all LGBTQ+ people in Wales, and project our values of Wales as an LGBTQ+ friendly nation, through diplomatic engagement and our overseas network, including with countries that do not necessarily share these views. And we take every opportunity to raise matters of human rights with representatives from overseas governments when we have the opportunity.

We will keep monitoring this matter, as the Bill is expected to be considered by the Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. We will also be monitoring implications for our non governmental initiatives in Uganda, to support communities, and the impact on LGBTQ+ people.
