Access to NHS dentistry in Powys Teaching Health Board has improved significantly since the introduction of alternative activity measure in April 2022. 77% of dental practices who are offering NHS services have opted-in to these reform measures, which include incentives to take on new NHS dental patients. This has allowed 3,977 new patients to gain access to dental services so far this financial year.
We know we need to attract dentists to more rural areas. To support this, Health Education and Improvement Wales has developed an enhanced offer to encourage future dental trainees to complete their foundation year in dental practices in rural Wales. In addition to a £5,000 salary uplift, dentists taking up the offer will also be provided with enhanced academic and wellbeing support for the duration of the programme. This will help to increase access to NHS care for people in rural Wales.
