The statutory register of historic parks and gardens includes almost 400 sites of national importance. Registration highlights the significance of a park or garden so it can be considered in local planning authority decision making. Planning Policy Wales explains that the effect of a proposed development on a registered park or garden, or its setting, is a material consideration in the determination of planning applications. Planning authorities should value, protect, conserve and enhance the special interest of parks and gardens and their settings included on the register. Cadw is also a statutory consultee on planning applications that affect parks and gardens.
Cadw has produced best-practice guidance aimed at owners and agents to help them understand and care for their registered historic park and garden and manage the changes that may affect it. Cadw has also recently grant-aided the preparation of conservation management plans for public historic parks and gardens.
