My officials have worked closely with Cyngor Ynys Môn from the outset to ascertain and mitigate the impact of the closure of the Menai Suspension Bridge on businesses within Menai Bridge itself. To quantify the impact a questionnaire for businesses and WIFI baseline monitoring of the town was put in place. This did show some drop in footfall but not significantly. Businesses reported a drop in spend but it is difficult to attribute this solely to the bridge closure when other factors, such as the cost-of-living crisis, may also be playing a part.

In recognition of the impact on businesses in the town officials worked with the local authority to put a number of support measures in place.

  • Cyngor Ynys Môn supported businesses within the town to ensure those eligible have applied for non-domestic rates relief already in place
  • A dedicated point of contact was established for local businesses through Business Wales and the Enterprise Hub on Anglesey
  • Free parking from 10am each day was established across the town
  • Communication and press are being used to promote the town

To date, eight businesses within Menai Bridge have been provided with direct business support through the Business Wales service since the bridge closure. The service has also engaged with a further 11 businesses in Menai Bridge as a result of the bridge closure. In addition, information relating to the bridge closure has been viewed 822 times on the Business Wales website.
