The NHS workforce is now at record levels with over 105,000 people, or 90,788 full time equivalents, directly employed by NHS Wales organisations. Health boards plan their workforce based on demographic and workforce trends, while Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) has a leading role in strategic workforce planning. Each year HEIW makes recommendations on the level of new healthcare professional training places, informed by health board Integrated Medium Terms Plans (IMTPs) and wider workforce intelligence. Through this process we are now investing record levels - £260m in 2022-23 - in the training of people for the future.
