St David’s Hall, as the National Concert Hall of Wales, is one of our most prestigious cultural venues, with an exceptional 40-year history of supporting the arts in Wales. The Welsh Government would like to see it continue to welcome diverse performers and audiences to its unique surroundings. However,  the future of the venue is an issue for Cardiff Council.

Cardiff Council is not immune to the significant financial pressures facing the public sector, and while we are doing all we can to support local government, some very difficult options are being explored.

Cardiff Council is committed to safeguarding jobs and the status of the concert hall as the National Concert Hall of Wales in any new administrative arrangements, including protecting and enabling access to classical music and community programmes.

The Welsh Government understands AMG approached Cardiff Council, and the proposal will be considered at a Cardiff Council Cabinet meeting on December 15. Prior to this, Cardiff Council will meet the Arts Council of Wales. The proposal will also be subject to consultation as part of the Council’s budget process.

Cadw has received a request to consider the building for listing and is meeting officials from Cardiff Council to discuss next steps.
