Short and long-term energy storage will enable us to maximise the use of renewable energy, capturing the energy when abundant and releasing it when we need to meet demand.

We are working with the Energy Systems Catapult on our Future Energy Grids for Wales project. This involves all the grid operators in Wales to develop Wales-specific future scenarios to help us establish the electricity and gas networks we need here to support the optimal net zero energy system.

The National Grid ESO is responsible for strategic grid planning, and its Future Energy Scenarios 2022 highlighted that the whole energy system of the future will require strategic storage to balance inter-seasonal demand and supply and increase resilience against external security of supply risks.

We are increasingly seeing the development of electricity storage in Wales, including co-located renewable electricity generation and storage.
