I was pleased over the summer to individually meet with the Chairs and Vice Chairs from the four Corporate Joint Committees to learn about the progress they are making.

Aligning economic development, transport and land use planning approaches in the CJC provides an opportunity for local authorities to deliver regional ambitions, develop successful regional economies and encourage local growth in a collaborative and strategic way.

The underpinning legislative framework CJCs operate within, which ensures they are subject to the same powers and duties as local authorities, is now in place.  The First Minister has written to the Secretary of State for Wales to seek agreement to take forward an Order under section 150 ‘Power to make consequential provision’ of the Government of Wales Act 2006.  This will provide for a small number of remaining technical changes needed to support the work of CJCs, including in relation to corporation tax and borrowing powers.

The Welsh Government will continue to work closely with regions to support them in discharging their duties and help address any challenges they experience.
