The degree apprenticeship programme commenced in 2018 and has been focused on Digital/ICT and Advanced Manufacture/Engineering. The programme operates across Wales – all universities apart from Aberystwyth. Most universities have Further Education College partners further increasing the number of delivery sites. Apprenticeship recruitment is taking place across all local authority areas.
The Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) has reported that Higher Education Institutions have submitted proposals for funding 1,070 apprentices in 2022/23, comprising of 480 new apprentices and 590 continuing apprentices.
We have been working with the HEFCW, the higher education sector and other partners to determine priorities for expansion. In particular we would want to prioritise expansion in areas that would deliver on net zero ambitions such as modern methods of construction.
