Responsibility for the procurement of food is devolved to Local Government and Health, therefore there is no Welsh Government food procurement policy.  Whilst devolved, Welsh public bodies must undertake purchases in alignment with the Wales Procurement Policy Statement (WPPS). The WPPS supports decarbonisation, principle 6 specifically states:

“We will act to prevent climate change by prioritising carbon reduction and zero emissions through more responsible and sustainable procurement to deliver our ambition for a net zero public sector Wales by 2030”

The Welsh Government works with local Food businesses that are rooted in local communities across Wales to ensure that they can access relevant procurement opportunities. This support promotes jobs opportunities and the development of skills by connecting businesses throughout the supply chain. In addition, the Welsh Government has supported a number of initiatives to trial and support local procurement projects and will continue to do so as part of the furthering of the foundational economy.
