The Food Standards Agency (FSA) leads on food allergen and food safety policy in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Following the tragic death of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, the teenager who died after suffering an allergic reaction to a Pret a Manger baguette, the FSA committed to introduce stronger laws to protect those with allergies and give them greater confidence in the food they buy.
The law, which came into effect in October 2021, requires businesses to provide full ingredient and allergen labelling on foods which are pre-packed for direct sale.
In 2019 the FSA launched a food hypersensitivity strategy and programme for delivery. Action delivered in Wales under the programme includes tailored resources for businesses to support awareness and understanding.
Officials in public health protection oversee the delivery of this policy area by the FSA in Wales.
