Retailers, which sell more than £100,000 a year of electrical and electronic equipment – this includes e-cigarettes – must either provide a free, in-store take-back service or join a distributor take-back scheme.

Vaping products are collected for recycling at household waste recycling centres, although they should not be placed in kerbside household recycling or residual waste collection systems.

Vaping product packaging can be disposed of via the kerbside household recycling service if it meets the local authority’s requirements. The packaging will also come under the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme for packaging, which is currently being developed. This scheme will see those responsible for placing packaging onto the market being required to pay the full net costs for the management of the waste once the packaging has been used. It is planned to go live in 2024.
