The recent increase in the cost of energy and the Russian forces’ aggression towards Ukraine has reinforced the need to develop a secure and affordable future energy system.  Net Zero Wales highlights the need for a complete transformation in the energy system, with flexible and smart grids and storage to match renewables with local demand.  It will inevitably also mean significant upscaling of deployment across a range of renewable technologies.

Net Zero Wales sets out the actions we will take over the period to 2026, and alongside implementing the deep dive recommendations we will ensure wealth and ownership is retained in Wales as we tackle the climate emergency.

The UK Government needs to step up and deliver. They have access to the vast resources needed to deliver a stable supply across the GB energy system. Their decision to refuse funding for the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon, against expert advice, means we have lost out not only on reliable renewable energy, but on the accompanying jobs and supply chain opportunities.  The upcoming Energy Supply Strategy is their chance to commit to the investment needed to match their stated ambition.
