I met with Baroness Vere of Norbiton on 15 December last year to discuss the Union Connectivity Review final report. I welcomed Sir Peter Hendy’s endorsement of our aims to improve sustainable, multi-modal transport solutions in North Wales and made clear my willingness to work constructively with the UK Government on the Review’s recommendations, provided that any collaboration respects the devolved settlement and focuses on routes of strategic cross-nation importance like the North Wales corridor. I anticipate further discussions over the next few months with the Department for Transport and the other Devolved Governments to agree a framework for taking forward the recommendations. However, this framework will only improve connectivity and achieve modal shift if it is backed-up with significant additional investment from the UK Government. The Review highlights yet again the need for Wales to receive its fair share of rail funding after years of underinvestment.
