The Welsh Government supports the Open University to deliver a salaried PGCE programme that enables individuals to be employed in a school whilst undertaking part-time study to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The programme commenced in September 2020 and offers a pathway to QTS that is equivalent to full-time programmes.
Currently there is a total of 167 Salaried PGCE student teachers working in Primary or Secondary schools across Wales. 46 of these student teachers are working in Welsh Medium or Bilingual schools.
