In September 2020 there were 277 artificial pitches in Wales. This figure includes 84 full-size 3G pitches, 77 full-size hockey artificial turf pitches (ATP) and 116 artificial pitches that are not full-size. A further audit of these facilities will be undertaken early next year.

Our main funding programme for investing in these facilities is through Sport Wales’ ‘A Place for Sport’ with a budget of £7m for 2021-22. As part of this funding a further six new artificial pitch projects are due for completion shortly.

Artificial pitches have historically been funded in a number of other ways, such as through National Lottery funding via Sport Wales grants, 21st Century Schools capital programme, local authority funding, and National Governing Body funding, in particular via the WRU and FAW.
