Whilst Transport for Wales is not a named public body under the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act, they have adopted the Act, its goals and ways of working to ensure they are appropriately discharging their responsibilities on behalf of Welsh Ministers.

In particular, to ensure they are meeting the aims of the Act and wider objectives, Transport for Wales have established an Advisory Panel structure, including representation from the Office of the Future Generations Commissioner. This is a key avenue for them to challenge and support Transport for Wales to live up to the Act.

The Office of the Future Generations Commissioner also supported Transport for Wales during the procurement of the Wales and Borders Rail Franchise and the Future Generation Report 2020 set out some challenges for Transport for Wales. This was written prior to TfW Rail being brought under public control during the pandemic, so Transport for Wales have since also taken on responsibility for the challenges set for the franchise operator.

Finally, we worked closely with the Office of the Future Generations Commissioner to develop ‘Llwybr Newydd’, our transport strategy. That strategy sets out the objectives and challenges we will need to meet in the years ahead and Transport for Wales will have a key role in its delivery.
