In financial year 20/21 £145,282 was spent. In the current financial year, £31,986 has been spent to date.

We are funding the Keep Wales Tidy’s Caru Cymru project. This is a three year programme, involving partnership working with all 22 Local Authorities in Wales and Cardiff University. Its aim is to tackle priority littering issues, including roadside litter. Work is currently underway to identify several roadside litter projects to be undertaken during 2022. These include an assessment of bin provision in laybys on some major roads and their impacts on litter, exploring the use of “car bins” and engagement with the road haulage association to promote anti-litter messages with its members. The results of this work will be made available to the Welsh Government in due course.

We also consulted on our draft Litter and Fly-tipping Prevention Plan earlier this year. This includes a commitment to gather evidence and trial specific behaviour change measures to help address roadside litter.  We are currently working with partners to identify innovative, cost effective measures to prevent and remove roadside litter.

During 2020 and 2021, we funded litter prevention social media communications to encourage people to use the bin, or take their litter home. More recently, we have been displaying ‘Keep Wales Tidy’ on road signs on our network and are happy to work with Local Authorities to support existing initiatives and any that may be proposed in the future.
