Storm overflows provide a controlled point of relief at times of heavy rainfall. With more extreme weather events occurring, they perform a crucial role in reducing the risk of sewers flooding homes and public spaces.
The Welsh Government has already taken action by making sustainable drainage mandatory on most new building developments. This will relieve pressure on the network by redirecting and slowing down the speed at which surface water enters the sewer system. It will help ensure storm overflows are only used as a last resort.
Officials are working with Wales’ water companies to develop Drainage and Wastewater Management Plans (DWMPs) and ensure a multi-sector catchment approach is taken to reduce discharges. The plans will enable the water companies to invest strategically for a wastewater and treatment network that is resilient and affordable in the long and short term. It will provide an opportunity for water companies and stakeholders to integrate their investment and development plans.
