We are currently working with the NHS on a framework for the renewal of all mental health services, which includes eating disorder services, and will sit within the context of the NHS wide recovery strategy, which will be published shortly.

We have continued to prioritise investment for eating disorder services and since 2017 health boards have received an additional £2.5m to support improvements in services and waiting times.  In 2019, funding was provided to health boards specifically to:

  • Reconfigure services towards earlier intervention.
  • Work towards achieving the NICE standards on eating disorders within two years.
  • Develop plans to achieve a four-week waiting time across adult and child services as recommended in the review.

In 2020-21, every health board received funding to support eating disorder services in their areas. In developing proposals for 2020-21, health boards were asked to consider the impact of COVID-19 on the current demand and models of eating disorder service provision.

We also encouraged health boards to consider how they may work cooperatively with each other to deliver for patients, potentially providing more highly specialised activities on a regional basis.

While progress has been made in improving health board eating disorder services, due to the current pandemic, the pressures across both workforce and delivery models have directly impacted their progress to achieve shorter waiting times and to deliver improvement plans for all age eating disorder services across Wales.

The National Clinical Lead for Eating Disorders took up post early in 2021 and has led stakeholder workshops with clinicians, third sector and people living with eating disorders. This is a pivotal role to deliver the transformational change needed in this area.
