The Welsh Government provides a wide spectrum of training for all professionals working in violence against women, domestic abuse and sexual violence roles, including training to address honour-based abuse and violence.

The Welsh Government’s National Training Framework is the first of its kind in the UK and was set up to ensure the quality of training and the required professional practice is standardised. This will help make sure that no matter where a victim lives in Wales, the professional response they receive is consistently good. More than 220,000 workers in Wales have been trained through the National Training Framework.

Group four of the National Training Framework offers specialist modules on honour-based abuse, FGM and forced marriage. These courses are suitable for independent domestic violence advisers and refuge and community based workers.

We have recently commissioned Karma Nirvana, an experienced honour-based abuse charity, to provide free virtual training from January until the end of March to all professionals working across the statutory and voluntary sector.

This training will enable learners to understand and identify honour-based abuse; manage and safely respond to disclosures of honour-based abuse; identify potential risk indicators in cases of honour-based abuse; provide ‘safer multi-agency spaces’ for victims and survivors to speak; and broaden ‘safe spaces’ for victims and survivors to make disclosures.

Short modules that contain awareness raising about honour-based abuse include ‘Ask and Act’, which is a process of targeted enquiry. More than 5,000 professionals across Wales have been trained to ask about abuse and act appropriately on disclosures.

In addition, more than 50,000 people have accessed the VAWDASV online e-learning module since the beginning of April when we opened it to guest access.

Completion of the VAWDASV e-learning module is a statutory duty for relevant authorities. This short course includes awareness raising about honour-based abuse.
