The Welsh Government has allocated significant additional funding this year to support children and families during the pandemic.  This includes:

  • £32 million for the Self-Isolation Support Scheme which provides £500 payments to individuals self-isolating. The scheme has recently been extended to cover the provision of £500 payments help parents and carers on low incomes who have to take time off work to look after their children when they have to self-isolate because of a coronavirus outbreak in their school or childcare setting.
  • £12.5 million announced in late October which specifically targets vulnerable children and families affected by the pandemic. The £12.5m package includes a range of measures such as:
  • £2m for the Child Development Fund to provide additional support for children and families to address concerns around developmental delays in areas such as speech, language and communication, motor skills, and personal and social development;
  • £800,000 for families experiencing difficulties in their relationships to help resolve conflict and family stress;
  • £860,000 to improve the quality of services being offered to families in Flying Start areas; and
  • More than £7m to support for families to stay safely together and to further develop the capacity of Wales’ foster care provision.
  • £40 million for the provision of Free School Meals during holiday and school closure periods. The Welsh Government was the first of the UK nations to implement such support to children.  Children who receive free school meal provision are also able to receive provision if they are not able to attend school because they are shielding or self-isolating
  • £54.5 million for our childcare offer and to support childcare providers. The support for providers is in addition to the business support provided through the Economic Resilience Fund.

We will continue to work with partners across Wales to monitor the impact of the pandemic on children and families and provide support where it is needed.
