As of 17 May, 53 children under the age of 10 and 107 children and young people aged between 10 and 19 have tested positive for Covid-19 out of a total number of 3,436 testing episodes for both cohorts.

In general, children tend to make a good recovery from Covid-19. The latest ONS data shows that up to the end of April, no child in Wales has died from the condition.

We are aware of various studies undertaken internationally, as well as work done in the UK and the emerging evidence continues to suggest that children are significantly less affected by the condition than their adult counterparts. Low case numbers in children suggest a very limited role in transmitting the condition and international studies of multiple family clusters have suggested that children were unlikely to be the index case.
