Recent studies have shown that there is compelling evidence of the substantial impact of HPV vaccination programmes on HPV infections and pre-cancerous growths among girls, women, boys and men. These results are very promising for the potential future impact of the forthcoming extension of the HPV vaccination programme in Wales to 12-13 year old boys. The vaccine will not only protect males from HPV-related diseases, such as oral, throat and anal cancer, but also help reduce the overall number of cervical cancers in women, through improving population immunity. I recently wrote to Members informing them that the extension to this programme will begin in the next academic year. Public Health Wales has a range of promotional material available for schools, parents and healthcare professionals to support the girls’ vaccination programme. A similar range of material is being developed for the programme extension.
