In response to the Health, Social Care and Sport Committee Everybody’s Business report, we set out our approach to prevent suicide and self-harm which includes exploring options to strengthen the evaluation of initiatives that have the potential for scalability. The Welsh Government and the National Advisory Group on Suicide and Self-Harm (NAG) are mapping current approaches in Wales to identify appropriate initiatives.

The current evidence tells us that men are more likely to die by suicide than women and middle aged men are identified as a priority group in Talk to Me 2, our national suicide and self-harm prevention strategy. Based on this data and to complement the work of the NAG, I have commissioned the Wales Centre for Public Policy (WCPP) to undertake a piece of qualitative research to understand what is driving these patterns in terms of male suicide.  This is currently in the scoping and evidence gathering phase which will conclude before summer recess.
