Seven areas have been designated as strategic hubs – Caerphilly/Ystrad Mynach; Neath; Ebbw Vale; Merthyr Tydfil; Cwmbran; Northern Bridgend and Pontypridd/Treforest.  Selection was based on consideration of areas across the South Wales Valleys where economic potential was greatest mapped against communities within public transport travel times of 45 minutes to ensure the proposed strategic hubs would benefit communities across the Valleys and not just those closest to the hubs.

Several Assembly Members have asked for various towns across the Valleys to be considered as additional strategic hubs.  The Ministerial Taskforce has explored the case and need for additional hubs as part of their work.  There are no plans to extend the current Valleys Taskforce boundary or designate any additional hubs.  However, Welsh Government is encouraging organisations to use the strategic hub model as a template for more effective/joined up government in other areas across Wales.
