Media engagement is a fundamental part of Visit Wales’s strategy to build Wales’s profile in the UK and internationally. These visits directly translate into high-quality, high-value coverage for our country in traditional media and new digital outlets globally, ranging from The Sunday Times to the National Geographic.
In order to secure this coverage, Visit Wales welcomes and hosts hundreds of journalist visits to Wales a year from countries from Australia to Germany to the USA - organised by Visit Wales and in collaboration with Visit Britain.
Whilst Visit Wales cannot breakdown press visit costs by location, as many trips cover wider regions, the return on investment we derive from this work is closely managed and monitored. Visit Wales will only work with journalists who have a firm commission from a publication and follows-up on all visits and coverage. The value of our media relations work was the equivalent of least £30m in advertising last year against a total Media Relations budget of £650,000. This result does not include Visit Wales press trip collaborations with Visit Britain, which show an additional 750 articles with 99.7% positive sentiment for Wales. This clearly represents significant value for money for Welsh Government.
North Wales attracts real media interest and whilst Visit Wales is unable to specify the exact value of coverage for these areas from our programme, I am pleased to confirm that Snowdonia National Park and the Conwy Valley feature prominently in our visits programme and resulting coverage. Examples of coverage achieved as a direct result of visits to these areas are included below.
Finally, Visit Wales’s work with The Lonely Planet contributed to their selection of North Wales as one of the main destinations in the world to visit in 2017 – the value of which was quantifiable, but also priceless.
