The Minister for Welsh Language and Lifelong Learning recently announced a £46 million investment via the Welsh-medium and Childcare Offer Capital Grants to support growth in Welsh-medium education.

Local authorities were asked to put forward projects that focus on increasing the number of pupils accessing Welsh-medium education and thereby contributing to meeting the Welsh Government’s target of one million Welsh speakers by 2050.

Conwy County Borough Council was successful in securing £246,700 for a one classroom extension at Ysgol Awel y Mynydd to increase the Welsh-medium childcare offer at the school.

Ysgol Awel y Mynydd opened in November 2017.  Replacing two community primary schools on a single site the project provided a 432 place, dual stream community primary school.  Since opening the local demand for the school has significantly increased especially in regard to the Welsh-medium offer.  The incorporation of an early years club will not only facilitate this demand but will make a significant contribution to our target of one million Welsh speakers.
