We are fully committed to the continued development of the Welsh language and the aim of one million Welsh speakers by 2050. The education system has a key role to play in achieving this aim so we need to ensure there is a sufficient workforce to provide Welsh-medium education.

Financial incentives are available for initial teacher education entrants who aim to teach the Welsh language and those wishing to teach through the medium of Welsh.

In October 2017[1] I also announced a new Welsh-medium incentive targeting secondary PGCE student teachers who are training to teach all subject specialisms through the medium of Welsh or bilingually. The Iaith Athrawon Yfory Incentive Scheme will compliment existing Welsh-medium provision to support the improvement of the quality and confidence of teaching delivered through the medium of Welsh at secondary school.

More information on our incentives and Welsh-medium support can be found at http://discoverteaching.wales/teacher-training-incentives/

In addition to our generous financial incentives for teachers to train in certain subjects we have recently launched a new recruitment campaign targeting potential teachers. This creative digital media campaign actively promotes the profession, to recruit the very best and brightest individuals into teaching. We are also advertising in University campuses and targeted electronic direct mail to existing undergraduates.
