There are no plans for Cadw custodians to be placed in all the hillforts of Wales. There are currently 463 defended prehistoric enclosures across Wales, including hillforts and promontory forts that enjoy legal protection as scheduled monuments. The vast majority of these are located on private land, largely in agricultural areas on hill top or coastal locations. Only three of these sites are directly in the care of the Welsh Ministers, Caer y Twr on Anglesey, the Bulwarks near Chepstow and Llanmelyn near Newport and these are unstaffed.  However, along with all other scheduled monuments, the hillforts receive periodic visits from Cadw’s Field Monument Wardens. They work with owners, occupiers and managers to promote their ongoing conservation and management. There is no specific fund set aside for the conservation of the hillforts although over the years numerous individual sites have benefitted from ancient monuments grants and management arrangements, including through agri-environment schemes such as Tir Gofal and Glastir.

More generally, the maintenance and promotion of prehistoric hill forts, are included within Cadw’s overall communications, interpretation, and marketing strategies and programmes.
