Local authorities face tough budgetary challenges, especially in respect of services and facilities which they provide on a non-statutory basis.

However the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act challenges public bodies to make decisions that focus on long term implications of their actions and creating a society that maximises people’s physical and mental well-being and sports pitches are a crucial component of the offer to support people adopting a healthy and physical lifestyle.

Sport Wales encourage local authorities to consult with sports clubs before considering increasing charges for sports pitches so that they fully understand the implications on how sports clubs are able to absorb any extra costs. Sport Wales also advocate the development of local authority Pitch Strategies to ensure there is an appropriate and affordable provision of sports pitches and offer grants towards pitch hire for training purposes for new provision, via Community Chest and Development Grants. This support can help sport clubs in the short term, while they establish their team or activity structure.
