Data is only routinely collected for pupils aged 3 attending a maintained school. The table below shows the number of pupils aged 3 in maintained schools from the Annual School Census to the mid year estimates of the population aged 3 produced by the Office for National Statistics. The data will vary between local authorities for the following reasons:
Most local authorities provide funding to settings outside the school sector for children aged under 5. Some children attend other, paid settings, for example private day nurseries, playgroups or childminders.
Provision for pupils aged under 5 may be on a part time or full time basis.
The table uses two different measures. The population estimates count pupils where they live and are estimates of the population at June 2016. The school census data are actual counts provided by the school and are correct as at January 2017. Some pupils will live in one authority but go to school in another authority and this explains why some of the percentages in the table in the table are greater than 100.
